Driver's license eye test
In Switzerland, a test of your visual skills is required for your driving license. This ensures road safety for everyone. You can come and have your eyesight tested at Iriss Optic, by appointment, bookable online. It concerns all categories of vehicle: car, scooter, motorcycle, boat, truck, etc…
Why do I need an eye exam for my driver's license?
There are several reasons why you should have your optical skills tested by an optician: :
-
For the learner’s permit to obtain your driving license.
-
If you wish to change your foreign license into a Swiss license, you must also do so within one year of your entry into Switzerland.
-
If you are 75 or over and have received a letter asking you to have an eye test and visit the doctor, Iriss Optic can do it for you.
-
If you’ve received a letter from the Department of Motor Vehicles and Shipping asking you to have your eyes checked from the age of 70. Please note that the results do not leave the store.
How the driving test works
1. We begin by measuring the visual acuity of each eye without glasses, and with glasses if you wear them. To do this, you sit in our examination room and read optotypes (letters) on a screen.
2. Next, we test the mobility of your eyes in the 6 viewing directions by having you follow an object with your eyes, without moving your head. In this way, we check for possible double vision in one direction of gaze.
3. Finally, we test your horizontal field of vision by moving an object forward beside you, and asking you to stop when you see it.

How do I prepare for my eye exam?
If you wear glasses, please bring them with you, as we will need to measure your visual acuity with your glasses, depending on your vision. If you wear contact lenses, you can bring your lenses with you. However, please bring your glasses with you to the appointment, as they may be useful if your contacts don’t give you sufficient vision.
For the test, you’ll need the driver’s license application form. At Iriss Optic, we’ll fill in the optical section at the bottom of the second page. You can bring your own, or we can provide you with one. Please also bring your identity card.
Summary of things to take with you to the appointment:
